Ruby has been sent to help Ada on the farm since Inman has been absent and off in the war. From this quote you can see a bit of Ruby's take charge attitude. She knows much about farming and goes directly by her "signs." She knows what she's doing and doesn't let anyone or anyting get in her way or tell her any different.
